About Us

Asian American Radiation & Oncology (AARO) is a boutique comprehensive cancer service based in Singapore with a mission to provide our patients with access to quality and personalized cancer care. To achieve this goal, we have put together an experienced team of oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, nurses and supporting staff to attend to you. More information about each specific role can be found under the section “Our Team“. This section will focus on the core competencies, clinical experience, and commitment of our Oncologists. We believe that apart from our unique set-up as the only independent radiation oncology service in Singapore, the highly specialized skill sets of our doctors are what will allow us to serve you best, and provide you with the peace of mind to entrust your cancer treatment in our hands.

Our Qualifications

All our doctors obtained their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees (M.B.B.S, Singapore) from the National University of Singapore, and went on to undergo Specialty Training in Oncology in the United Kingdom, eventually being conferred Fellowship in the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR, Clinical Oncology, UK) as qualified Clinical Oncologists. Our doctors are further accredited as practicing Radiation Oncologists in Singapore, having also obtained Fellowship into the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS, Radiation Oncology, Singapore).

Our Competencies

Our clinical competencies are in the holistic management of cancer from “pre-cancer” screening and genetic testing, to the diagnosis, investigation, staging and treatment of all cancer types. Our technical competencies are in the clinical application of all modern radiation technologies such as 3D conformal radiotherapy, Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and Volumetric-Arc Therapy (VMAT). Our unique expertise is in Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR), also known as SBRT, for which our team has garnered extensive local and international experience during the course of our specialist practice.

Our Experience

In Singapore, our doctors have pioneered Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy and Brain and Spine Radiosurgery programmes in both the government and private sectors, and have regularly organized courses and social events to update our fraternity on the latest technology and advances in radiation oncology. As such, our doctors collectively possess the largest pool of experience in the use of SRS and SBRT in sites such as spine, liver and prostate cancers, having personally developed these programmes in their respective centers, and in Singapore as a whole. In addition, each doctor is also sub-specialized in different tumor sites, allowing us to provide our patients with the in-depth knowledge and most up-to-date treatment options required to decide on the best management plan for their specific cancer.

Regionally, AARO’s doctors have served multiple tenures as National Project Coordinators for UN-lead initiatives over the past 10 years, with the goal of developing the practice of advanced radiotherapy in the Asia-Pacific region. Their role as National Project Coordinators have included conducting Regional Training Courses – involving up to 20 countries each time – to equip attendees with the skills to introduce IMRT, IGRT and SBRT in their respective home countries, and developing Singapore as a Regional Training Hub for our neighbors in the South East Asian region. Our doctors are also regularly invited as expert speakers in local and regional radiation oncology conferences.

Internationally, our team has collectively undergone advanced training/fellowships for up to 2 years at a time in the United States, Canada, UK, Europe, and Asia Pacific, and frequently present at international oncology and stereotactic radiotherapy conferences. They continue to work closely with international colleagues in pursuing advances in radiation oncology through clinical collaborations and publication of papers in peer-reviewed oncology journals.
Our Commitment

Above all, as clinicians who have dedicated our careers to achieving excellence in cancer treatment, our priority remains in providing quality and personalized care to every patient coming through our doors. This explains the meticulous approach and keen attention to details that our doctors demonstrate in every patient encounter, as it is in these details that the most up-to-date and tailored treatment decisions can be made for each individual. This is especially important since we are now in the era of Personalized and Precision medicine, where treatment no longer exists in a one-size-fits-all package based purely on the type and stage of the cancer, but rather depends on individual factors such as mutation status of the tumor, degree of expression of immune biomarkers, and presence or absence of genetic features, all of which will ultimately affect the choice of chemotherapy, targeted biological agent or immunotherapy, as well as the sensitivity of the tumor to different doses and regimens of radiotherapy.

It is here that our clinical competencies and technical expertise, combined with a thorough and conscientious approach to each patient’s diagnosis and concerns will prove critical to the success of your treatment, thus fulfilling our mission to provide Quality and Personalized Cancer Care for all patients.
